Usually solo kayaks are the easiest to maneuver and best for beginners. My experience with sharing a canoe was not very successful. Unless rowing in circles is your thing, I recommend getting your own kayak to experiment with rowing until you really get the hang of it.
Depending on how long you rented your boat for, make sure you leave enough time to return to the dock--especially if you have to paddle back upstream. Keep in mind that you will get wet during this activity (even if you don't fall in) so make sure to pack towels and dress appropriately.
Now get out there and row, row, row your boat...
